Sweetgrass, Hierochloe odorata (L.), is considered a rare perennial grass, it grows from underground runners and is a member of the Poaceae family, it rarely produces seeds. Wild Sweetgrass stands are declining due to over- harvesting for both personal and commercial use and Sweetgrass has become scarce and hard to find, it is considered rare in California. Our plants are organically grown (no chemicals used), one plug should grow to cover an approximate 2 square foot area in one full growing season, depending on soil and weather conditions. This should yield at least 4 to 5 braids if growing to braid. Sweetgrass plants grow in full sun to partial shade and it does best in a sandy loam with plenty of water. Sweetgrass does not do well indoors or in clay soils. Plants will usually over winter in states with winters like those in Ohio, Kentucky and Idaho, the tops die off and the roots go dormant. In areas that get real hard ground freezes a straw covering can be applied and this will also assist the plants with sprouting a little earlier in the spring. My ancestors have used Sweetgrass for many years either by burning it as incense "smudging", during various ceremonial gatherings and by weaving it into beautiful baskets. Sweetgrass is also called, Holy Grass, Buffalo Grass, Seneca Grass, Vanilla Grass, and Zebrovka, "The Place Where Bison's Graze". It is believed by some that if one braids Sweetgrass it should be braided in a three piece braid. The pieces are said to signify the Mind, Body and Spirit. The plant is also referred to at times as "The Hair Of Our Mother The Earth" and The Grass That Never Dies". From our experience in growing Sweetgrass we have found that it is not necessary to cut, braid and burn it in order to enjoy it's distinct sweet scent, this can be done by growing it around your home as a natural incense. Whether burned as an incense, woven into a basket or just enjoyed as a truly unique outdoor plant we have not found one that is more fulfilling to have, we believe you will find it a pleasure to have and grow also. Grasslands Inc. Does Not endorse the burning, smoking or ingesting of the plant in any way and if done, is done at the individuals Own Risk. Sweetgrass contains coumarin, a natural anticoagulant, which has shown some potential toxicity if ingested and it has long been established that smoking in general is very bad for one's health and therefore Should Never be done.

Sweetgrass Image                             Sweetgrass Image     We ship large, healthy, living, organically grown Sweetgrass plugs that have already been growing in the plug pots, you just need to provide some water and sun and they will take off. The plants can be fertilized with some organic fertilizer in approximately 2 to 3 months. Plugs should definitely be watered at the time of delivery.

Our Sweetgrass is an original US strain of organically grown Sweetgrass that we have cultivated for many years and we believe it to be some of the very best Sweetgrass available in the world. Sweetgrass is a very easy plant to grow and for anyone who enjoys plant life this is one plant you will want to get, it is a lot of fun to have and grow and you get the benefit of having your own Sweetgrass to braid or for a natural outdoor incense plant.
It is not necessary to cut and burn Sweetgrass to enjoy its sweet "vanilla like" scent, when the wind blows through it you'll definitely know it's there.

We keep hearing and reading about "some kind" of Sweetgrass that does not produce any scent while growing green in the field, garden or pots. Our Sweetgrass, ( Hierochloe odorata (L.) that we have organically cultivated and ship to you, produces scent while growing green. We have many years of experience with the cultivation and propagation of Sweetgrass plants, "rootstock" and this particular strain of Sweetgrass has always produced scent while growing green in the fields. There are times when the scent is heavy and times when it is milder, but there is always that wonderful "vanilla like", but not exactly a scent that is truly describable, wafting through the air. You just have to be where Sweetgrass is for the experience, as there is nothing else that has the same wonderful scent as Sweetgrass, so Try ours, it has scents.
